Jobsite safety is everyone’s concern.

Jobsite safety is everyone’s concern.

Jobsite safety is everyone’s number one priority and during these difficult times it can be particularly challenging. Besides being OSHA compliant, which includes Covid-19 safety practices, there are many safety procedures and equipment that are key to keeping your workers safe – all while keeping projects on budget and on schedule.

While OSHA compliance is essential, it’s also important to put additional safety practices in place as part of your daily work routine. Habits like keeping the jobsite clean and free of debris and planning ahead to ensure that the proper tools are available. When it comes to safety, it’s everyone’s job.

OSHA’s COVID-19 exposure risk:
Construction work tasks associated with exposure risk levels:

Lower: (caution) Tasks that allow employees to remain at least 6 feet apart and involve little contact with the public, visitors, or customers.

Medium: tasks that require workers to be within 6 feet of one another.
Tasks that require workers to be in close contact (within 6 feet) with customers, visitors, or members of the public.

High: Entering an indoor work site occupied by people such as other workers, customers, or residents suspected of having or known to have COVID-19, including when an occupant of the site reports signs and symptoms consistent with COVID-19.

Very high: Category is not applicable for most anticipated work tasks. Note: Most construction work tasks are associated with no more than high exposure risk.

CDC Cloth Face Coverings in Construction Recommendation:
“CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings as a protective measure in addition to social distancing (i.e., staying at least 6 feet away from others). Cloth face coverings may be especially important when social distancing is not possible or feasible based on working conditions. A cloth face covering may reduce the amount of large respiratory droplets that a person spreads when talking, sneezing, or coughing. Cloth face coverings may prevent people who do not know they have the virus that causes COVID-19 from spreading it to others. Cloth face coverings are intended to protect other people—not the wearer.”

Personal protective equipment (PPE) and jobsite safety equipment:
With so many potential hazards on the jobsite, ranging from electrical dangers and falls to weather exposure and cuts, having the proper PPE is critical to ensure worker safety. Instituting fall protection systems, requiring proper head, face and eye protection to guard against flying debris, chemicals, dust, noise and more – all common at any masonry jobsite where digging, drilling, grinding and mixing occur.

If your work zone includes channeling traffic, the use of delineators, caution tape, cones and proper signage will help keep workers, drivers and pedestrians out of harms way. Safety is the priority.

Safety training: the more you know the better off you are. Implement jobsite safety meetings to discuss proper procedures, the importance of safety and to create a culture of safety, whereby everyone takes it seriously and understands its importance.
